Winter Snowscape

Friday morning: our neighbors call to inform us that the snow-covered roads to our cabin are once again open, so we immediately headed up for two nights.

Friday afternoon: the winds were howling!  4 large semi tractor/trailer trucks are laying on their sides next to the road. The 60+ mph winds blew them over as they attempted to come over the pass into Laramie. Continue reading “Winter Snowscape”

Real winter in the Colorado High Country…..

Our friends and cabin neighbors (who are full-time mountain residents and hardy folks), have been “snowed-in” for almost 3 weeks.  The roads were closed by early snow storms, and since the county does not plow to clear them, our friends have been unable to get to town.   Continue reading “Real winter in the Colorado High Country…..”

Winter Is Here…..

I am at my 8,500′, (2,600m) elevation cabin preparing for winter.
At this moment, the temperature is 28F (-2 C) with winds at 40 mph (65 kph) velocity. The weather is blustery, but the beautiful sunset makes it worthwhile to hike to the top of the nearby ridge.

Tuesday 8″ (20cm) of snow is forecast along with -6F (-21C) evening low temperature.

Real winter has begun…..

Where the wild things are…..

At our Colorado mountain cabin, we have two game cameras.  They are motion triggered, set on a creek near a beaver pond and regularly frequented by wild animals of all sorts.  On some weeks, the cameras capure over one thousand photographs.  We regularly see moose, elk, mule deer, pronghorn antelope, coyotes, bear, bobcat, owls, hawks, great blue heron, beaver, marmot, rabbits and more.  We especially enjoy the spring when mama moose, elk and deer show up regularly with their babies.

Here is a sampling of wild visitors, who kindly left their images as they stopped by.  Continue reading “Best Game Cam Pics”

Colorado – soooo lovely in the Fall!

Driving 3 ½ hours through the colorful Colorado mountains we find the aspen color is pretty much finished, but cottonwoods are still in their full golden full glory in the creek bottoms.
